Description
An account of the resource
Chemists, and other people who do careful weighings, know that we live at the bottom of a sea of air, and that a buoyant force equal to the weight of the air displaced by our bodies acts upward on us. Alas, the density of air is small, and the buoyant force is also small. To demonstrate this effect, a brass balloon is placed on one end of an equal arm balance. When the air surrounding the balloon is removed, the buoyant force is removed, and the balance tilts.

A sextant is used in nautical navigation measure the angle between two visible objects. The angle, and the time it was measured, can be used to calculate a position line on a nautical or aeronautical chart. A common use of the sextant is to sight the sun at solar noon and to measure the elevation (altitude) angle at night to measure the elevation angle from the horizon plane to Polaris to find one’s latitude. Since the sextant can be used to measure the angle between any two objects, it can be held horizontally to measure the angle between two landmarks.

Wiedemann's Galvanometer
Subject

Electricity
Description
An account of the resource
The galvanometer is a current measuring device. Gustav H. Wiedemann's version of the galvanometer was developed in 1874. The coils on either side of the suspended needle could be moved back and forth to change the sensitivity, and a series of coils, ranging from 2000 Ohms down to about 6 Ohms, was provided. Damping was provided by surrounding the magnet with a copper ring or sphere. He employed a mirror attached to the lower part of the torsion fiber to act as an optical lever to increase the sensitivity of the instrument. This version was sold by Queen of Philadelphia. A somewhat similar galvanometer is listed in the 1887 Queen catalogue of electrical testing apparatus at $156.00.

Kaleidoscopes operate on the principle of multiple reflection, where several mirrors are attached together. There are three rectangular lengthwise mirrors. Setting the mirrors at a 45 degree angle creates eight duplicate images of the objects, six at 60°, and four at 90°. As the tube is rotated, the tumbling of the colored objects presents the viewer with varying colors and patterns. Any arbitrary pattern of objects shows up as a beautiful symmetrical pattern created by the reflections in the mirrors.
